PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Portland Public Schools is just one vote away from purchasing a building for the long-promised Center for Black Student Excellence.
Two buildings on the One North property in Portland’s Albina neighborhood are set to be the center’s new home.
Plans by PPS staff include a long list of resources in the east and west buildings, focused both on academic success and cultural enrichment, respectfully.
Officials said Tuesday night that the west building is for learning how to shape the world, and the east is for learning that they belong in it.
Some of the features include tutoring space, classrooms, a living museum, a commercial kitchen, an event space and much more.
Organizers say this is following through on the district’s promise to voters, who approved a $60-million bond for this project back in 2020.
“This is what beloved community looks like, not in theory, but in practice — learning surrounded by belonging. Achievement wrapped in care,” Nichole Watson, with PPS’s Family and Community Development.
After buying the property and renovating it for student use, the project is expected to come in under budget.
On Dec. 2, the board is set to officially close on the property.
