Brown University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the US.

It is part of the Ivy League, a group of elite universities in the north-east of the country.

Its 11,000 students face intense competition to be accepted to Brown, which is located in Providence, the capital city of Rhode Island.

It lies around 50 miles (80km) from Boston and 180 miles from New York City.

Students were on campus this weekend for final exams, marking the end of the autumn semester.

Officials say the shooting took place in the Barus & Holley engineering building, located on the eastern end of the downtown campus.

The seven-storey building is home to the School of Engineering and the physics department, and includes more than 100 laboratories, dozens of classrooms and three lecture halls.
