MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Madison nonprofit, Black Girl Magic, hosted their monthly free event for students Saturday.
Girls from fourth grade through high school came to make crafts, read books and build community.
The organization hosts the monthly event to create a space where Black girls and women can feel comfortable to learn from one another.
The founder and executive director, Rosa Thompson, started the nonprofit first as an afterschool club while she taught elementary school. Now, it’s expanded into an organization that supports hundreds of students.
“We know that middle schoolers and high schoolers they go where they want to go and where they enjoy going and so it really means a lot to us that the girls come back and they enjoy being here,” Thompson said.
Black Girl Magic also hosts weekly events within individual schools, and a yearly convention, which over 600 girls attend.
“Part of our mission is really just building community among Black girls and Black women and just creating these spaces,” Thompson said. “Whether it’s in school, or like today in the community, girls from across the city, across the county can enjoy each other and learn something.”
Their next free Saturday event is on January 10, where girls will learn how to tell stories through digital content creation.
