PENSACOLA, Fla. — Two former Escambia County educators are being recognized in an Orlando exhibit honoring the legacy of Black women in Florida.
Former Escambia County commissioner and retired educator Marie Young was among the chosen women. Former county educator and current UWF associate professor and grammar lab director Mamie Hixon was selected as well.
“The Power of Her Presence: Honoring the Legacy of Black Women in Florida is a powerful cultural and historical exhibition sponsored by the African American Women’s History Month Project, Inc., dedicated to celebrating the lives, leadership, and lasting impact of 56 Black women representing the state of Florida,” according to a release.
The grand opening is on Jan. 10 at the Women’s History and Cultural Center in Orlando. The public can view the exhibit from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
“The Power of Her Presence honors women from diverse fields including education, healthcare, public service, arts and culture, advocacy, business, and community leadership,” the release said. “The exhibit preserves history while inspiring future generations to lead with purpose, courage, and authenticity.”
The exhibit will be open until April 30.
