Google Expands AI Shopping, Partners With Major Retailers

Google announced Sunday it is expanding shopping features inside its AI chatbot, Gemini, partnering with major retailers including Walmart, Shopify and Wayfair to turn the app into both a virtual shopping assistant and a place to complete purchases.

The update will allow users to browse products and, in some cases, complete purchases directly inside the Gemini chat without being redirected to another website or app. According to Walmart and Google, the new instant checkout option will work with several payment providers, streamlining the buying process for customers.

The announcement was made on the opening day of the National Retail Federation’s annual convention in New York. The event is expected to bring together about 40,000 attendees from the retail and technology sectors, with artificial intelligence and its growing influence on online shopping expected to be major themes throughout the three-day conference.

“The transition from traditional web or app search to agent-led commerce represents the next great evolution in retail,” said John Furner, Walmart’s incoming president and CEO, in a joint statement with Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Under the new system, Gemini can suggest products based on user questions, such as recommending gear for a winter ski trip, by pulling items from participating retailers’ inventories.

For Walmart customers who link their Walmart and Google accounts, Gemini can offer personalized recommendations based on past purchases. Items selected through the chatbot can also be added directly to existing Walmart or Sam’s Club online shopping carts, according to the companies.
