Several Black-owned restaurants will be participating in “EatBlack: A York Black Restaurant Affair,” a two-week event designed to highlight and celebrate local eateries and drinkeries during Black History Month.
Edquina Washington and Nacole Gaines organized the event, which runs from Feb. 8 through Feb. 21. The two had the idea for a couple of years before deciding to move forward with it.
“It’s just an opportunity to provide our community with the ability to know where our Black eateries … and drinkeries are, enjoy themselves, and experience the rich flavor and culture of our Black cuisine here in York,” Washington said during a phone interview.

If customers mention they’re at the restaurant or drinkery to celebrate EatBlackYork, the business will offer a discount. It’s up to the establishment whether the discount is on select items or the entire menu.
Patrons are asked to take photos and share them on social media using the hashtag #EatBlackYork. They are encouraged to leave a generous tip to show their appreciation, Washington said.
Eight businesses are participating, but more could be joining, she said.

Skillet2Plate Soul Bistro to offer seafood lasagna and more
Skillet2Plate Soul Bistro in downtown York will be one of the establishments participating in the event.
“We just decided to participate to support our local entrepreneurs and community members who started this initiative and then just want to always support our community,” said Lauren Days, who co-owns the business with her husband, Terrence.
The restaurant will be offering its full menu, which includes popular items such as fried whiting, baked macaroni and cheese, yams, and soul bowls. It’s also known for its signature condiment, Buss’n Sauce, which comes in original and habanero flavors.
It also will be featuring a few specials, too, at times during the event.
One of the offerings will be crab and shrimp soul rolls, which are similar to egg rolls, with its special signature sauce, Days said. The cost is two for $8.
The restaurant also plans to make seafood lasagna, which will include crab, shrimp, crawfish, a variety of cheeses and garnishes. The cost will be market price.
Diners also can try the restaurant’s signature drinks, which are peach tea and mango lemonade.
Days encourages the community to give her restaurant a try as well as the other establishments participating in #EatBlackYork to support the local businesses.
