The City of College Station celebrates Black History Month with art, dance, and performance


COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The City of College Station is honoring Black History Month with a vibrant series of events celebrating African American culture, creativity, and heritage. From paint parties to African dance classes, the Lincoln Recreation Center invites the community to participate in meaningful celebrations throughout February.

A Historic Venue with Deeper Meaning

The Lincoln Recreation Center holds special significance for the community. The building was once Lincoln High School, a segregated institution that served as a vital social and cultural hub for College Station’s Black community. The school’s historic motto—“Forward forever, backward never”—continues to inspire the center’s mission today.

Upcoming Events

Creative Expressions Through Art: Unity in Color Paint Party

When: Wednesday, February 11, 6–8 p.m. Who: Ages 16 and up Cost: $20 for residents | $25 for non-residents Registration Deadline: February 9

Join the Sisterhood Soirée for an evening of creativity, bonding, and self-expression. Participants will paint their own unique masterpiece on canvas to take home and display. This relaxing social event is perfect for celebrating friendships and exploring your artistic side. All supplies are provided, including canvases, paint, brushes, easels, and disposable aprons.

Who Are We: We Are Black History

When: Friday, February 20, 5:30–7 p.m. Who: All ages Cost: Free admission

Young members of the Lincoln Recreation Center will journey through African American performing arts history, creating an extraordinary exhibition celebrating Black excellence. Additional participants under 18 are welcome to join. For more information, call 979-764-3779 or email parks@cstx.gov.

Roots & Rhythms: African Dance

When: Wednesday, February 25, 6–7:30 p.m. Who: All ages Cost: Free

Partner Kuaminika Dance Academy invites the community to an energetic and inspiring African dance class exploring rich rhythms, vibrant movements, and the cultural stories behind traditional and contemporary styles. This family-friendly class is perfect for all skill levels and offers an outstanding way to connect with African heritage, stay active, and express yourself through dance.

Whether you’re brushing up on critical historical moments or celebrating with your local community, Black History Month is an excellent opportunity to engage with the people, places, and things that shape our shared history.
