The Office of the Mayor President will host For the Culture, a signature Black History Month program celebrating legacy, and cultural excellence on Thursday, February 19 at 6:00 PM at the Raising Cane’s River Center.
The event will host community leaders, cultural icons, and residents for an evening honoring the impact of Black leaders who have shaped Baton Rouge and the nation. The program will feature appearances by
- Verge Ausberry – Director of Athletics at LSU, Ausberry has spent over three decades in collegiate athletics administration, fundraising, and community engagement.
- Maxine Crump – First African American woman to live on LSU’s campus, first African American woman DJ on Baton Rouge radio, and the first African American woman news reporter on Baton Rouge television.
- W. T. Winfield – Former East Baton Rouge Parish School Board representative (District 6) and Democratic leader, Winfield has worked to strengthen public education in the community.
- Gerri Hobdy – Hobby is a veteran nonprofit and community leader with decades of experience in behavioral health, cultural development, and equity initiatives.
- Rebecca Perloff – President of the NAACP Baton Rouge Branch, Perloff is a civil rights leader focused on protecting civil rights and advancing justice through disciplined and strategic action in the Baton Rouge area. She has also served as Caucus Administrator for the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus.
- John Smith – John Smith currently serves as Coordinator of the Fair Share Program for East Baton Rouge Parish Schools, connecting women and minority-owned businesses with contracting opportunities. He has extensive experience in community affairs, corporate outreach, and civic engagement.
The evening will also include:
- Key to the City Presentation to Lynn Whitfield – Emmy-winning actress and Baton Rouge native, recognized for her contributions to film, television, and the arts.
- Keynote Speaker Pastor Danny Donaldson – Senior Pastor of Rose Hill Church, Pastor Donaldson is a respected faith leader, mentor, and community advocate known for connecting faith with practical life lessons.
The event is free and open to the public. Residents are encouraged to attend and participate in this celebration of Black history, culture, and excellence. Space is limited and attendees are required to RSVP in advance at BRLA.gov/BHMProgram
