JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Families across the metro celebrated with fun, games, food, and learning at the Two Mississippi Museums on Saturday.
“The Legacy on the Block” event brought the community together to celebrate and highlight Black history and culture.
Partners unite for community event
Color of Change, Jackson Public Schools, and Fahrenheit Creative Group, LLC, joined together to create an event that consisted of panel discussions, free entry into the museums, a reading nook, and more.
Destanie Newell, Senior Campaign Organizer at Color of Change, said they wanted to remind the youth of the importance of Black history to U.S. history.
“Bringing their history front and center, giving them an opportunity to experience and enjoy this free museum day, but also just remind them of the importance of their legacy and their culture and celebrate that with the community and everyone,” Newell said.
A memorable day for families
For Paris Jenkins, the day was memorable and educational.
“I’ve been able to eat, go to the museum and look at stuff, and I learned about history,” Jenkins said.
“The Legacy on the Block” event provided families with a day of fun, education, and community connection.
