Community comes together for 28th annual Black History Parade

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The 28th annual Black History Celebration in Hattiesburg featured several events, starting with a parade.

High school bands and other organizations were invited to participate in the parade, which began at Martin Luther King Avenue and ended at Vernon Dahmer Park.

Members of the Black History Executive Committee say they are proud to be able to acknowledge Black history for another consecutive year.

“It’s extremely important to celebrate Black history, especially here in Forrest County,” said Dee Moye, chair of the Black History Celebration Executive Committee.

“Forrest County was the namesake of the founder of the Ku Klux Klan, Nathan Bedford Forrest, so it’s good to remind people where we come from, but also let people know where we’re going as well, so it’s very important here.”

After concluding at Dahmer Park, the Black History Celebration continued with a baseball tournament as well as a fireworks show.
