LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — The Barton Coliseum was buzzing Saturday as the fourth annual Defeat the Beast Rodeo wrapped up this evening, closing out two nights of high-energy rodeo action.
The invitational showcased some of the country’s top African American cowboys and cowgirls, celebrating heritage, community and a legacy of excellence in rodeo. Organizers also said the event is meant to spark interest among young people in careers tied to agriculture and the rodeo industry, pointing to opportunities that go well beyond what happens in the arena.
“We are the culture, right? We are the essence of what this is. And it’s very important to give us a space right to not only just celebrate one another, but to enjoy each other,” said Chris Washington, emcee of the event. “This is a family friendly event. You can bring the kids out right? And also it’s a history lesson for those that are not of the culture.”
