Debate over ‘Free Palestine’ mural in Richmond’s Northside leads to proposal for new design

A mural on Richmond’s Northside is stirring up debate over its imagery and meaning.

It sits at the corner of Brookland Park Boulevard and North Avenue. The mural shows a darker-skinned woman holding a slice of watermelon, with the seeds spelling out “FREE PALESTINE.”

Some Black community members said their issue is not the message, but the watermelon imagery — which they say carries offensive stereotypes, especially in this historically Black neighborhood.

  1. Who/what board normally approves the different murals around the city? There are a lot of beautiful murals here, and I always thought it was up to the person who owns the property. Has it gone to a community vote in the past?

  2. These goofy so called black leaders don't know history of the ppl they claim they lead . The mockery of black americans and watermelon began because black american farmers organized behind a watermelon flag and watermelon itself was a big part of their economic growth. Shout-out to all the current neighborhood watermelon man keep remnant of what was still alive!!

  3. Soo we understand what it actually means, Buutt we’re still going to pretend to be offended. 😂😂😂 Gotta love it. Woke on woke drama. Lmao

  4. So are y'all trying to make that satire skit by Danny Polishchuck a reality or what? Nothing about any of this makes any sense. His satire skit came out a month ago, then y'all make a "news segment" doing the same thing. Really? You're that pressed for ideas?

  5. 😂😂😂😂 yo that's wild . Plus Egypt ⛽⛽ gassed the Palestinians 😂😂😂none of the Muslim countries over there well help them but it's Israels fault 😂😂😂😂 4 colors of the horsemen of the Apocalypse not not a coincidence
