William “Will” Douglas’ long-term vision extends beyond personal transformation. As the founder of One’s Own Will, he frames his work as part of a broader effort to influence how health, discipline, and leadership are perceived within his community. In particular, he aims to serve as a visible example for young Black men that meaningful change is attainable, regardless of where someone begins.
He recalls growing up in a society where health was never positioned as a priority. “You’d mostly find quick-service spots in the neighborhood,” he says. “There weren’t many places centered on fresh produce or healthier choices.” From his perspective, that reality was not simply about preference. It reflected financial and structural barriers that influenced daily choices.
“Without consistent access to nutritious food or affordable fitness spaces, activity often depended on school gym classes or occasional sports leagues,” he says. “Outside of those windows, health was not emphasized.” According to Will, this absence created what he views as a self-reinforcing pattern of limited access, reduced prioritization, and long-term health risks.
Layered onto that environment, he notes, was another dynamic: how physicality shaped perceptions of manhood. “The more physically fit you were, the more you were seen as a leader,” he says. Growing up, he received jokes about his weight. He notes that physique, confidence, and social standing are often felt intertwined, and that many young men internalized the idea that strength equaled worth.
Public health data illustrate stark differences in life expectancy across racial groups in the United States. According to a report, the overall life expectancy at birth was 77.5 years. When disaggregated by race, for males specifically, the pattern reflects similar disparities: non-Hispanic Black males could expect to live 69.1 years, while non-Hispanic White males had a life expectancy of 75.1 years in 2022. These figures, Will notes, underscore the extent of longevity differences that persist across demographic groups.
His own turning point began with a medical visit during the COVID-19 period. At nearly 300 pounds, he was told that although no immediate conditions were present, the trajectory could lead to serious complications later in life. “It was a reality check,” he says. Yet the change was not immediate. He acknowledges that nearly a year passed before he committed to altering his habits. “I didn’t walk out and transform overnight,” he says. “But it stayed in the back of my mind.”
He also explains a broader hesitation common among men. “We tend to take it on the chin and try to fix it ourselves,” he explains. From his perspective, traditional narratives of masculinity may discourage vulnerability, including routine medical visits or asking for support.
When Will began training consistently, he initially kept it private. He explains that early progress was not dramatic, and he feared criticism. “People want to congratulate the results,” he says. “They don’t always understand the slow progress.” Over time, as visible changes emerged, encouragement followed. The experience shaped how he now approaches others who are at the beginning of their journeys.
Through One’s Own Will, Will has created a digital community platform centered on structured challenges, shared accountability, and consistent visibility. The platform invites members to document workouts, reflect on discipline, and participate in monthly fitness challenges. According to him, the objective extends beyond physical change. “I want to build something that’s less competitive and more around companionship,” he says. He believes that public progress can normalize vulnerability and persistence.

The community reflects his broader commitment to action. Through sharing his daily training and preparation for events such as the Spartan Race that happened on March 14th, Will placed himself alongside participants rather than above them. He notes that competition is not about comparison, but about consistent progress. “There’s no better time to get better than today,” he says.
As One’s Own Will evolves, Will explains his role not simply as a coach, but as a participant in a broader cultural shift. He wants young men to see that prioritizing health does not diminish masculinity; it strengthens it. From his perspective, stepping into leadership begins with discipline, transparency, and the willingness to begin before confidence fully forms.
“I want people to know they are not alone in this,” he says. “If I can show up every day and keep pushing, then someone else can too.”
