PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — On the eve of the fifth anniversary of George Floyd’s death, Portlanders gathered downtown for the “We Are the Bridge Rally and March” to honor Floyd and the Black community in the city.

Floyd was murdered by police officer Derek Chauvin after a store clerk suspected him of using a counterfeit $20 bill. The rally included a 9-minute and 29-second moment of silence, symbolizing the duration Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck.

In Minneapolis, the community is creating a memorial of flowers and other tributes to Floyd. A local group hosted a workshop to create art and what they call symbols of hope. Amid the remembrance, people are speaking out about the progress since Floyd’s death.

“Today is a great celebration and uplifting George Floyd, but day-to-day it seems like nobody really cares. This is five years later and we haven’t got any new programs. We haven’t got any new resources and funding for the people that are out here on a day-to-day basis. Seems like a struggle specifically for the Black men that own property and businesses right here,” said one participant.

Community members said Floyd’s death led to social change and a reset in communities across the country.
