Rapper Kodak Black was arrested this week on a drug trafficking charge in central Florida in his latest run-in with law enforcement.

Orange County Jail records list the original charge as trafficking more than 10 grams and less than 200 grams of MDMA, the drug commonly known as ecstasy or molly. The case dates back to an incident in November, the rapper’s attorney said.

The Pompano Beach rapper, born Bill Kapri, 28, was arrested following a police encounter in Orlando when officers were called to a neighborhood by residents who reported hearing gunshots. Officers encountered a bunch of people hanging out around parked luxury sports utility vehicles, including Black, according to a police report.

An officer noticed a white substance on a $100 bill inside a Lamborghini SUV, which smelled of cannabis, giving the officer probable cause to search the vehicle. During the search, the officer found a pink bag containing a plastic bag of MDMA, $37,000 and numerous documents with Black’s name on them, the police report said.

The pink bag matched a bag seen in a photo of Black that the rapper had posted to his Instagram account. The bag also contained a distinct lighter that was also in the photo, investigators said.

According to the police report, everyone at the scene denied owning the bag, including Black, who nevertheless said the money belonged to his business and asked for it back.

Black made his first appearance before a judge on Thursday, where he entered a written plea of not guilty and asked for a jury trial. He also waived appearing in person at a future arraignment hearing in state court.

His defense attorney spoke first, arguing that because Black flew in from California to turn himself in, and given the evidence surrounding his arrest, that he should be given a $10,000 bond.

The attorney alleged that Black was detained after two vehicles were searched by authorities in Orlando, and drugs were found in at least one.

The attorney said the rapper was not in either vehicle and that they were not registered to him, though he was at the scene. The attorney also argued that an analysis did not return fingerprints tying Black to the items found.

“I know [probable cause] was already found, so I’m not gonna argue p.c., even though it’s really screaming at me,” his attorney told the judge.

A prosecutor responded that the state would want to raise the bond above the standard $50,000, citing that Black was a “professional rapper,” Haitian American and had flown in from California.

The state requested that “in light of his occupation and lack of ties to Orlando, that [bond] actually be increased and one of the conditions be that he surrender his passport.”

In response, the rapper’s legal team said through laughs: “He is a proud Haitian American, but he is an American. He has a U.S. passport. He doesn’t have any plans on leaving the country. I mean, we’ve faced cases that are ten times this case, and I’ve won, by the way… but the fact that he’s a rapper doesn’t give you a legal purpose to raise the bond.”

The judge thanked both parties for their arguments and said that although Black did not claim ownership of a bag found at the scene, “you were requesting that the funds within the bag be turned over to you. So there at least is some tie, it seems like to the court, to that bag.”

The judge set his bond at $75,000, citing 12 previous felony convictions, two misdemeanor convictions and one failure to appear. He said the fact that Black was a rapper had “no binding.”

The rapper was ordered not to have contact with co-defendants and witnesses in the case, but the defense raised that some of the witnesses were family members or members of his security team. The judge said he would allow contact with those witnesses.

The rapper has found himself behind bars in South Florida multiple times in recent years.

In 2023, he was booked into the Broward County jail for alleged possession of cocaine, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence and improperly parking or stopping a vehicle, records showed.

The rapper was also arrested in Fort Lauderdale in July 2022 after Florida Highway Patrol troopers pulled him over and found 31 oxycodone tablets and $74,960 in cash, authorities said. He was also driving with an expired driver’s license and tags at the time.

And last month, Jammiah Broomfield, the mother of one of his children, was arrested on a drug trafficking charge in Fort Lauderdale, records showed.

Kodak Black’s debut album Painting Pictures peaked at no. 3 on Billboard. He performed at the 2026 April Fools Comedy Jam at Barclays Center on April 4 in New York City.
