Large Ebola Outbreak Declared in Congo with 65 Dead
Africa’s top public health agency has declared a new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, reporting 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases in Ituri province. The outbreak is concentrated in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones in eastern Congo, near the borders of Uganda and South Sudan. Uganda confirmed a related death after a 59-year-old Congolese man died in a Kampala hospital following travel from the DRC.
The DRC’s national research laboratory detected Ebola in 13 of 20 samples and identified the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no licensed vaccine. Fox News reported that only four deaths have been laboratory confirmed, and initial tests suggested the outbreak not involve the Ebola Zaire strain. Congo holds stockpiles of treatments and about 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, and this marks the country’s 17th recorded Ebola outbreak since 1976.
Africa CDC convened an urgent meeting with the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan, the WHO, and pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC, said rapid regional coordination is essential given high population movement between affected areas and neighboring countries. Africa CDC cited the urban context of Bunia and Rwampara, mining-related mobility, militia clashes, and gaps in contact tracing as complications.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency received a signal of suspected Ebola cases in the DRC and sent a team to support the health ministry on 5. He also announced the release of $500,000 from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies. Jay Bhattacharya, heading the US CDC, said the agency has offices in the DRC and Uganda and is offering technical assistance, noting they were informed about the large outbreak the day before.
