BACK TO JIM CROW! The Supreme Court Destroys Black Voters’ Rights!

The U.S. Supreme Court just ruled that Louisiana’s 2024 congressional map — the one that finally created a second majority-Black district in a state that’s about 30% Black — is an “unconstitutional racial gerrymander.”

In a 6–3 decision along partisan lines, the conservative majority said Louisiana mapmakers relied “too heavily” on race when they drew a second Black-majority district to comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, even though lower courts had previously found the old map illegally diluted Black voting power. The ruling keeps Section 2 technically intact, but it narrows how states can consider race to fix decades of discrimination, gutting one of the key tools that protected Black and Brown voters after the Civil Rights Movement.

For Black voters in Louisiana and across the South, this is bigger than just one map. The Voting Rights Act — once the jewel of the Civil Rights Movement — has been chipped away for more than a decade, from Shelby County v. Holder in 2013 to this latest decision, which makes it harder to create districts where Black communities can actually elect candidates of their choice. Civil rights groups warn that this opens the door to even more attacks on fair maps and could reshape power in Congress for years to come.

In this video, we break down:

What the Court decided in the Louisiana case

How the decision weakens the Voting Rights Act without formally overturning it

Why a state that’s roughly one-third Black is being told two Black-majority districts is “too much”

What this means for Black political power and representation going forward

What you can do right now to learn more and get involved in protecting voting rights
