TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Florida congresswoman has announced she is running for Congressional District 20, drawing pushback from Black lawmakers.
Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz currently represents District 25 in South Florida, but with the new congressional map, she now lives in District 20. As a result, she is now running for District 20.
Florida’s legislative Black caucus slammed Schultz for running in what they said is a historically black district.
Florida Politics:
“With only two remaining Black access congressional districts in Florida, the significance of representation in District 20 cannot be overstated. This district was established to remedy decades of racial exclusion and to ensure that Black communities have the opportunity to elect leaders who truly reflect their experiences and needs,” the statement said.
The state caucus said she ignored requests from the black community to run in another district. Their statement said she is “perpetuating a narrative of performative allyship rather than meaningful connection.”
This is part of the fallout of Florida’s new congressional map. A judge heard arguments last week on whether to block the map and there has yet to be a ruling.
