Pine Bluff, Ark. (KATV) — Boots, hats and a whole lot of hometown pride are headed to Pine Bluff this weekend as the Black Rodeo Takeover returns for its fourth year.

The fourth annual Black Rodeo Takeover is set for Saturday, May 30, at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.

Organizers say more than 100 Black cowboys and girls from across the United States are expected to compete.

Daniel Moore, who started the event when he was 19 years old, said this year’s rodeo is shaping up to be a big one, with multiple entertainers and plenty of competition.

“We’re giving away a $10,000 prize as far as what the Cowboys are competing for,” Moore said.

Moore said the rodeo is about more than just the action in the arena. “We want to bring awareness to the black cowboy, and so that’s what it’s all about,” he said, adding that it’s also meant to be “a good family fun event.”

The event is designed for all ages, with kid-friendly activities including mutton busting and a calf scramble.

Moore said he started riding when he was about 3 years old, and he hopes the rodeo can inspire young people to try something new.

“That’s the biggest goal, is to get young people involved in something that they’ve never experienced before,” he said.

The rodeo will also spotlight performers from Pine Bluff and the surrounding area. Moore said Mikiyah Mustiful, who appeared on American Idol this season, will be one of the opening acts.

G Pace and his band, from Monticello, Arkansas, will also perform, along with Brian King Jr. from Pine Bluff.
