The Trump administration is introducing major changes to the federal student aid system through a new Workforce Pell Grant program and updated student loan policies.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon announced that Pell Grant funding will now be available for trade certifications and workforce training programs tied to industries like manufacturing and welding, expanding aid beyond traditional four-year college degrees.
The administration says the goal is to strengthen the workforce and reduce tuition pressures. However, critics argue the changes could reduce access to higher education for low-income students. New loan caps for graduate degree programs are also set to take effect July 1.
