Shelby community calls for accountability, rebuilt trust after viral arrest video

SHELBY, N.C. (WBTV) – Concerned community members in Shelby are continuing to speak out against the use of excessive force during an altercation between a police officer and a Black woman last week.

In a video from May 29, a Shelby police officer could be seen throwing punches at 34-year-old Cherrie Moore repeatedly. The officer, later identified as 22-year-old Karson Hyder, was fired over the arrest, and charged on Monday with assault.

Residents in the Shelby said that trust between the community and law enforcement needs to be built back.

“It felt good. I’m not going to lie,” said Ray Lockhart, who spoke at the meeting. “God put it on my heart and said to get up there and I’ll speak through you.”

Another speaker voiced that the misdemeanor charges Hyder faces are “a slap on the wrist.”

Local clergy member, Marcus Strong, said people he knows never expected something like this to happen in their community.

“I believe that we must do more training [to help] people who are mentally ill who get arrested. I think that we need to rebuild the trust with the Black community,” Strong said. “I think the good thing that has happened this weekend is that now we have no other choice, but to face racism and what could be an ongoing problem in our community in regard to police brutality.”

During the meeting, the City of Shelby read a statement saying in part “as we move forward, I ask that our Shelby Police Department not be judged by the actions of one individual.

These actions seen in the video circulating on social media are horrific and do not reflect the training and protocols of our police department.”
