Armed with an AR-style rifle, a white Texas man was arrested after showing up to a Black child’s birthday party at a community pool, making threats. The incident followed a dispute involving his wife, per Atlanta Black Star.
Kevin Brown, a 44-year-old firefighter, was taken into custody last week in Melissa, a Dallas suburb, after police say he pulled out the weapon during a heated argument around the pool.
The incident erupted after Brown’s wife, Aidan Brown, confronted the children about propping open the pool gate, sparking an argument with their parents.
According to NBC 5, a call from Brown’s wife “prompted him to come to the pool armed with an AR-platform weapon.”
Wade Simpson, a father whose daughter attended the party, described chaos as kids ran frantically when he looked up and saw the man approaching with the rifle.
Viral TikTok footage was captured by @dayumvikcole or ‘Vikki,’ the mother of the daughter having her birthday celebration. It shows the wife shouting as children ran around them. It then cuts to the couple with officers in handcuffs. As of today, it’s been viewed nearly 4 million times.
“I mean, the whole group was going at it. It was maybe like eight people involved, shouting and things of that nature,” Simpson said,” Simpson said to NBC 5.
Brown faces a Class B misdemeanor charge for displaying a firearm in a public place. Police say they’re not investigating it as a hate crime, though some locals would say otherwise.
“Melissa is not a safe place for a person of color,” Simpson said to the outlet.
The Irving Fire Department has placed Kevin on administrative leave, pending a “detailed internal investigation,” NBC 5 shares.
