Second black bear sighting in Tradition community raising concerns about wildlife habitats

Newly uncovered footage reveals that a black bear wandering through the Tradition community was actually spotted a day earlier than initially reported, captured by a property owner’s outdoor camera.

The camera, positioned near a boar trap on a property along SW Lake Fern Circle, caught the bear roaming the area around 5 a.m. on Sunday. The video shows the bear approaching the lens before turning and heading off into the brush.

This discovery comes directly on the heels of a separate video that surfaced earlier this week, which showed a black bear cooling off in a neighborhood retention pond before taking off running down a residential street.

While a bear sighting in a suburban neighborhood might seem unusual, Tradition residents tell CBS12 News they aren’t shocked, given the rapid pace of construction expanding into local wildlife habitats.

“There are so many houses out here. We’re going to see a lot more of it,” said resident Sissy Smith. “I just feel bad for the wildlife out here.”

For other neighbors, sharing a backyard with large wildlife is a stark change from what they envisioned when relocating to the Sunshine State.

“I didn’t think you moved to Florida, and you get a black bear to visit you in your backyard,” said Rachel Murray, who owns the property where the Sunday morning footage was captured.

In response to the back-to-back sightings, the Town Park Homeowners Association (HOA) released a statement warning residents to remain vigilant, specifically advising them to use extra caution when walking pets and taking out household trash.

According to the HOA, state wildlife officials confirmed they will not step in to relocate or remove the animal until it “becomes a threat.”
