African Americans have been receiving backlash over their Zulu parade. Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club in New Orleans is accused of cultural appropriation and blackface. I am African American and I can only speak for myself. I have not received any back lash regarding this incident and am only just hearing about this because I was fumbling through YouTube videos trying to find out more about Burkino Faso. African Americans are not a country or political group. We are individuals in America and have no representation or representatives that truly speak on our behalf. Also, those are clearly white men in black face at a float in an organized parade- meaning it’s a business, probably marketing itself at the parade. Target the business and not all African Americans. It’s somewhat sad to have to explain this, but not all African Americans were at this parade (I am hundreds of miles away from where this took place). So it’s false to say that we are (as if some country recognized by NATO) inciting some kind of “act of war” against South Africa with a parade. I am at my home. I also hate that it happened and hope there’s a resolution. But let’s stop making gossip war so that the real colonialism taking place in both of our countries can be destroyed. This type of yellow journalism only helps them.
Every parade is this way look at Bacchus/endymion none of them are Greek, etc… I get it for the south African people and its not to offend them but to honor and show them respect and resilience and if we as the people of new Orleans have to make these changes to appease them then we need to make demands for anyone playing jazz music/ cajun cuisine/ etc….

It’s the name…. The Zulu parade has nothing to do with Zulu people. They need to CHANGE THE NAME! The customs are NOT the same nor is the parade! Social Media will be the death of us all. In many parts of the world People from back in the days learned and practiced distorted ideas of cultures. They had no way of knowing what was accurate, because it was from back in the days when communication was hard to do with other groups around the planet. The people today are just following customs that was passed down to them, thats all. A good example is how the dutch view black people in regards to their version of Santa Clause. It is bad, but thats' what they been taught all those years ago. Now it is up to the people who know the information to politely tell the other people who been doing it wrong for over a century this is how you do it. Not threaten people to stop doing it. Cooperation and discussion changes the world. Not threats and accusations. The people in south Africa assume that the local New Orleans people are disrespecting them, when they don't know the correct way. They know only what has been passed down and taught to them. People of the parade now that you know, invite a proper group from south Africa to teach the new Orleans group the proper way to celebrate a long lost culture. Stop the diaspora wars. It helps no one.
