To get why Russian commandos might be patrolling the presidential palace in Ouagadougou, you have to understand the constant, lethal threat that surrounds Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Since he took power in September 2022, his leadership has been defined by a series of what his government has described as desperate and deadly plots to oust him.
He’s a man living under a permanent state of siege, not just from the jihadist insurgencies that control huge parts of his country, but from within his own military and from forces gathering across the borders.
These threats aren’t just abstract; they’re very real. In just the last year, his government has claimed to have stopped multiple major coup attempts. The government alleges that one recent plot was a sophisticated plan to swarm the presidential palace, assassinate Traoré, and throw the nation into total chaos, hoping it would trigger an international intervention.
According to Burkina Faso’s Security Minister, the conspiracy was a dangerous mix of disgruntled military officers working with some of the same terrorist leaders Traoré has vowed to destroy. The plan, as the government tells it, was to create chaos and force the country under the supervision of an outside group, which would effectively end Burkina Faso’s sovereign path.
The government has said it intercepted communications between a high-ranking officer and jihadist commanders about coordinating the palace assault with wider terrorist attacks. This wasn’t just a grab for power; it was allegedly a plan to break the state itself.
High-profile officers were arrested—men who once held top command positions now stand accused of treason. Captain Traoré himself has had to issue public warnings, calling on his people to stay vigilant against “stateless enemies” who are “very active.”
The government has also been very direct in its accusations, claiming the masterminds of these plots are based in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire, a nation with historical ties to France.
It’s an accusation that strains an already tense regional relationship and paints a picture of a leader surrounded by enemies both inside and out. Ouagadougou has demanded the extradition of politicians and military personnel it accuses of plotting against the state, but these requests have been denied.
This constant state of high alert has changed the capital. Cabinet meetings are reportedly held with sniffer dogs and circling helicopters. Key military camps are under heavy watch, with armed vehicles posted at their gates.
