MADISON, Wis. — Music, dancing, and even motorcycles filled the streets on Madison’s south side for the annual Juneteenth parade on Saturday.
The holiday commemorates the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when more than 250,000 enslaved Black people became free, two years after the emancipation proclamation was made effective.
One parade goer, who has lived in Madison for 23 years, said he’d never seen the celebration as big as it was on Saturday.
“This has been a different and amazing outcome,” Russell Wilson said.
The parade ended near Penn Park, where people gathered for food, games, and the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
The song was performed by Michelle Bozeman-Brown, who said she’s been singing the song at this event for about 10 years.
“I’m always honored to be out here doing this,” Bozeman-Brown said.
