Thick black smoke billowed from Rosedale tire shop fire that closed Pulaski Highway
Pulaski Highway closed in Rosedale after fire breaks out at tire shop
Well, I heard that that firefighter had heat-related injuries. I heard that from the assistant fire chief. He didn’t say exactly what those injuries were, uh, but thankfully they said that no civilians were injured in all of this. But I want to go back to that video, just incredible video right there that you can see of that fire, smoke billowing into the air. Um, I was talking to people who said they could see it from far away, probably, probably 1 mile or two, I want to say. Um, people. Saying that they’ve never seen anything like this before, but I was able to talk to the assistant fire chief. He said that they got the call of this fire around 2:30 this afternoon. They initially got it as the call for *** brush fire, but when they got to this area, the 7800 block of Pulaski Highway, they said that tires, *** trailer, and an RV were on fire when they got here. They had to call in *** hazmat. Team, they said they do that anytime they have rubber rubber that is burning as those tires are, um, and they knocked it up to *** 2nd alarm because of the heat. You know, that’s something that we’ve been talking about *** lot today, how hot it’s going to get. The assistant fire chief said that they wanted to make sure that they were able to rotate crews, um, in and out of that fire, uh, because of heat, and he actually spoke *** little bit about that. I want you all to take *** listen. It’s very much *** challenge. The health and safety of our workforce is always *** top priority for us. We’re wearing about 300 pounds of gear with our protective gear, our self-contained breathing apparatus, etc. We want to make sure that we rotate our people in and out of those activities. They get rehabbed, they get hydrated, they get their vital signs checked all on the scene. And one thing too I want to note is that he told me that tire fires actually burn more intense than other fires. So when you put that on top of the heat related challenges here and just the challenge of fighting *** fire, that just really shows you what they were going through today. But as you said, that fire is now under control. We have some crews behind us. They literally left, I want to say maybe like 5 or 10 minutes ago. Uh, there are some more crews down the road from where we are. We’re gonna head down there in *** few minutes to try to get some footage of that. Uh, but again, no civilians were injured in all of this. This is all under control, and we have that one firefighter that has heat-related injuries. So we’re gonna have *** little bit more on this on the news at 7, but for now we’re reporting live here in Baltimore County, Kyrie Stewart, WBALTB 11 News.
