MTN is consistently recognized as one of Nigeria’s highest corporate taxpayers, often accounting for more than 10% of the entire country's federal tax revenue collection. Nigeria also collected $billions in penalties for their not switching off unregistered (RICA) numbers. They tried some penalties with Multichoice too but they failed. The major & established SAn businesses which were successfully set up in Nigeria (after Obasanjo invited SA to kickstart their economy after Sani Abache's disastrous tenure) and are exiting or exited already were sold as well-functioning going concerns (Shoprite, Tiger Brands, Pick n Pay) or left completely leaving space for locals to sell in those well set-up spaces (Mr Price, Woolworths, and Truworths ). Stanbic, Multichoice & MTN are embedded in Nigeria. While there are frequent political calls by Nigerian student bodies (like NANS) or lawmakers to push out giants like MTN and MultiChoice, these companies are not exiting. They are heavily localised: MTN Nigeria is listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX). Millions of shares are owned directly by ordinary Nigerian citizens, institutional investors, and local pension funds. Even if the South African parent company ever downsized its equity, the infrastructure is already structurally tethered to Nigerian corporate capital. SA leaving completely would mean liquidating all that Nigerian business. Whoever buys, we don't know what's going to happen to the share price without MTN SA backing. Plus there'd be no taxes form SA. I don't think Nigeria wants all that.
