Black smoke could be seen for miles as a fire burns in southern New Jersey on Sunday.
The fire started around 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1 near the area of 17th and Carman streets in Camden, officials said.
According to officials, the two-alarm fire started in a one-story garage before it spread into a four-story warehouse.
Sasha Gonzalez lives nearby and was home when the fire broke out.
“I hear the most horrendous banging on my front door. Quite intense,” Gonzalez recalled. “I come down. They say, ‘You need to go. You need to GTFO.’ I was like, I’m going to grab some stuff and make some calls.”
The smoke was so heavy at times, some who live nearby said they had come to see what was happening for themselves.
“Nah, this is actually…my first time seeing something like this,” Antonio Rodriguez told NBC 10.
At least four other departments helped crews from the Camden Fire Department, but it wasn’t just firefighters who answered the call for help. Rehab 13 led by station chief Joe Anderson also set up near the fire site to provide food for emergency crews.
Anderson said the purpose of the initiative is provide rest for first responders during large events.
“We can do hot food in less than 20. We have cold drinks. We have hot drinks, if needed,” he said. “On a big scene, after they do their thing, they go to the ambulance, do a mini physical and come
to us, and rest up so they can go back to work. We only go to big things. Been at 99 towns, or so. We go where we are needed long term.”
NBC10 crews at the scene saw the New Jersey Fire Marshal and at least one fire truck as firefighters worked to put the blaze out.
No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this point, as it the extent of the fire damage at the warehouse.
