ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Local artists, farmers, land owners and vendors came together Saturday, Sept. 5 at Resora’s campus to honor Shirley Sherrod for 60 years in agriculture.

Shirley and her husband, Charles, have spent decades working to preserve Black farms and promote land ownership for minorities.

The two of them founded the Sherrod Institute, where their mission is to connect people, especially Black farmers, with the proper resources they need to protect and sustain their land.

Many business owners and vendors also showed up to support and build community ties.

“For me, it’s community, it’s power, it’s connection. It’s people coming together to enjoy one another,” said Cassenda Nelson, a local poet.
