South Africa migrants : Businesses suffer the effects of repatriations

As regional leaders gather in Durban for a SADC summit, migration is set to dominate after months of protests against undocumented migrants in South Africa.

The government says more than 89,000 people have been repatriated since March, leaving farms and wholesalers short of staff, with business groups warning orders are falling behind, and prompting diplomatic tensions with Ghana and Nigeria.

Al Jazeera’s Clement Manyathela reports from Johannesburg, South Africa.

  1. So business is down. Yet the south Africans have Not taken the jobs? So they bullied and threatened their lives, yet the south africans still have Not taken those vacancies?😮

  2. What is not making sense is how the government had "nothing to do with it". Very interesting and foolish leadership over there in SA.. very interesting and foolish bunch of political leaders

  3. The media just keeps spinning lies and you get people in the comment section also adding onto the lies.

You are in a country illegally! Labour shortage or not you must be deported!

  4. As an American, I'm wondering: were those businesses paying South Africa's minimum wage (R30.23 / US$1.82) per hour to those illegal immigrants? I'd bet money that they were NOT, hence the drama unfolding in South Africa. While I don't condone the violence (which likely wouldn't have happened had the government been doing ITS job), South Africans have the RIGHT to determine who can enter their country.

  5. Let them suffer bcz of their actions. It karma shouldn't have employed undocumented foreigners at first place. Those business should be closed for good bcz they don't comply with the laws and regulations of South Africa 🇿🇦

  6. No, they do not want undocumented migrants out. They want ALL migrants out. No distinction. Do not paper over the language of these xenophobic groups.

  7. So they are suffering because illegal immigrants are chased out now they have no one to exploit 😂😂😂

This is what they mean by even if all the illegals can leave our unemployment wont improve.

  8. Should've employed locals and/or documented immigrants to begin with…

Undocumented migrants are easily exploited and paid far below the minimum wage, but they'll never talk to that

  9. Well, that didn’t take long. Now let’s see if any of those protesting South Africans will go and get those available jobs…or is it as we all expect? They don’t wanna do that kind of work

  10. IF THESE SOUTH AFRICANS MOBS WANTS TO EXPELLED FOREIGN WORKERS, THEN LET THEM WORK ON THOSE POSITION, AND LET THEIR SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY SUFFER ALONG WITH THEM ALL!!!
