The man accused of stabbing a well-known gym owner to death at his home in Over-the-Rhine returned to court Wednesday morning.Mordecia Black, 38, was arraigned on 14 criminal counts, including aggravated murder. The court room was jam-packed, with people supporting Patrick and Sarah Heringer.At one point, prosecutors showed pictures and gave new insight into the case.”There is surveillance on the home. He entered with his knife,” prosecutor Elyse Deters said. Deters went on to say Black first attacked Sarah before Patrick stepped in to protect her. “He was stabbed to death for it,” she said. Deters went on to say the killing might not have happened if Black didn’t slip through the cracks of parole, going so far as to say there’s “no question” if he is released, he will hurt more people.It happened in the early morning hours of June 4 at the Heringer’s home on East McMicken Ave. Surveillance video appears to show Black walking down the street and carrying a knife shortly before investigators say he broke into the home and, ultimately, killing Patrick.He was released from prison on parole in January. Prosecutors say he cut off his ankle monitor a month later.Prosecutors asked for a $2 million bond. The judge ultimately set it for $5 million.Sarah, along with the entire Over-the-Rhine community, have been outspoken in this case. That was echoed again Wednesday. “I just wanted to say that we are really happy with the bond,” Sarah said after the arraignment. “We’ll be following this process closely throughout the entire time.”Since Black’s arrest, officials have ordered Ohio’s Parole Authority to directly notify law enforcement when an arrest warrant for a targeted violent offender is issued. Black is currently being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center.He’s due back in court on July 10. If convicted, he faces the possibility of life without parole.
