NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten is urging calm in a community where racial tensions are high after a group of white men beat a lone black man in the Kingston community Friday night.

Sunday morning, he said in light of video evidence not available on Friday, more arrests will be made in the case.

Patten is also urging anyone who witnessed or was part of the incident on Friday to come forward no later than Monday morning.

“To the individuals whose identities were captured in these videos or whose voices can be heard on the videos, come to the sheriff’s office on Monday first thing, or we will be seeking you out and picking you up,” he said.

“We are deeply troubled by the recent incident involving the assault on Reginald Butler and the subsequent arrest of all parties involved,” Patten said. “The emergence of videos has shed new light on the events that took place that day when three individuals unjustly attacked a man who was simply minding his own business.

“We recognize the profound pain, anger and frustration this has caused the entire community and we share in the outrage over this injustice,” he said. “Hate has no place in our society and certainly not in our community that has made so much progress.”

On Friday night, Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of an altercation near a party in the area of the 100 block of Deerfield Road in Adams County at approximately 8:16 p.m. While en route, deputies were informed that one individual had been shot, Patten said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that two separate altercations had occurred near a bridge on Deerfield Road, where multiple individuals reportedly assaulted Reginald Butler. After the initial assault, Butler left the area on a bicycle but later returned in the direction of the original altercation.

ACSO reports say Butler was again attacked on another bridge. The attack escalated and Butler drew a firearm and fired several shots, hitting Hayden Pounds in the chest and striking a vehicle once. Pounds was airlifted from the area for treatment.

“No one should ever face such treatment and we are committed to ensuring justice is served,” Patten said Sunday.

“During our initial investigation, we did not have access to these videos. In light of the video evidence surfacing, we are taking immediate action to review the case, correct any missteps in the legal process and hold those responsible for the assault fully accountable.”

Patten said he and his deputies are in the process of identifying the other individuals in the video and fully expect more arrests to be made.

“We are asking anyone who has any additional information — anyone who was on the scene or witnessed this terrible event — please come forward and give witness or testimony on what happened there so we can move forward accurately and according to the law.

“To the citizens of Adams County, know this: We are fully committed to fostering a community where everyone feels safe, valued and protected under the law,” Patten said. “We will be addressing this according to the facts and evidence, not emotions. We want to urge everyone to channel their emotions to constructive dialogue as we come to a fair and just resolution.”

He asked citizens to continue submitting videos or other evidence they may have from the incident.

“Please keep the evidence coming. It has been extremely helpful for us in understanding what truly took place. We know a lot of videos have been shared through social media, but we are not sure we have all of the videos out there and we are asking the public to call us at 601-442-2752 or to submit videos to Crime Stoppers anonymously.
