NATCHEZ — Adams County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a 16-year-old juvenile Tuesday morning for his part in an attack on a Black man in the Kingston area Friday night.
Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said the juvenile has been charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.
The incident was captured on video by numerous people who used their phone cameras to record the beatings. Those disturbing images have sparked outrage in the community from both Black and white residents.
Hundreds of residents have taken to social media to express anger, hurt and support for Reginald Butler, who appears in the videos to be the victim of numerous young men and women who were gathered on Deerfield Road in Kingston for a party of sorts.
Butler, 33, a resident of the area, was out riding his bicycle when he encountered the party-goers, some of whom knocked him off his bicycle and pummeled him.
Butler allegedly went back to his home and retrieved a handgun before getting on his bicycle and taking off again on Deerfield Road. He allegedly encountered the gang again, but at a different location on Deerfield Road, when some individuals began to beat him a second time.
Butler was allegedly being dragged into a wooded area by the white men when he drew his weapon and shot one of them — Hayden Pounds — in the chest. One bullet also pierced a nearby vehicle.
Pounds was airlifted from a nearby ball field to a hospital. He has since been released.
Butler was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Also arrested was Cameron Taunton, 21, of Vidalia, Louisiana, who can be seen in the video knocking Butler off his bicycle and striking him with a closed fist multiple times.
Taunton’s original charge was simple assault. However, on Monday, Taunton’s charges were upgraded to aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. Justice Court Judge Danny Barber ordered Taunton held on $350,000 bond.
Also arrested on Monday was Houston Pretty, 18, of Vidalia, who has also been charged with aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. Barber set his bond at $350,000.
Barber set a bond of $50,000 for Butler Monday morning, and he was soon released from custody.
