ST. LOUIS — As Black Pride St. Louis marks 30 years in the LGBTQ+ community, the nonprofit is facing a nearly $30,000 gap in funding.
Organization leaders said the reason is due to sponsors either pulling out or decreasing their donations in relation to the current administration.
Black Pride St. Louis provides programs and resources throughout the year on equity, arts, entertainment, economic development, health and wellness, and civil and social advocacy. The nonprofit also hosts the Black Pride STL Weekend event every year.
“In order for us to be the catalyst in these trying times, it’s important for us to make sure that we do exist, so we can make those things happen for community members that need assistance and those resources,” said Randy Rafter, executive director of Black Pride St. Louis.
To help close the gap in funds, the nonprofit has launched a $30 for 30 campaign, in honor of its 30th year. Those who donate can receive a limited-edition anniversary item.
Damion Parks-Weekly, president and CEO of Black Pride St. Louis, said the community’s response to the campaign has been “great.”
“People actually did hear the call and understand the need of it,” Parks-Weekly said.
“We’re more than just a party weekend, but 365, we offer resources and programming throughout the year. People understand that we need operations money and not just funds to take care of our celebration weekend.”
The campaign will run through the end of the year. To learn more and make a donation, visit the organization’s website.
