Community supports students through 4th Annual ‘Black’ to School Toiletry Drive – Minden Press-Herald

Despite rainy weather, the 4th Annual “Black” to School Toiletry Drive saw strong community support Saturday, August 2, at 3Jays Tax Office.

The event, which focuses on providing essential hygiene products for students, aims to support a confident and positive school experience. The drive specifically addresses the personal care needs of young Black students by collecting culturally relevant items such as natural hair products, hair gel, lotion, deodorant, combs, brushes, toothbrushes, and sunscreen formulated for melanated skin.

“The drive went exceptionally well,” said organizer Tayler Banks. “This was the fourth year, but the first time we had icky weather. I appreciate the community not letting the rain stop them from coming out to donate and support this cause.”

In addition to donated supplies, Banks received a significant amount in monetary contributions. She said those funds will be used to purchase additional toiletries for all K-8 grade schools in the Minden area as well as several campuses on the north end of Webster Parish.

“Delivery will begin tomorrow and I am so excited and grateful to be able to provide these items for the students of Webster Parish,” Banks said. “Once again, thanks to all who donated to The ‘Black’ to School Toiletry Drive.”
