Brutontown Cemetery in Greenville, South Carolina, dates to the late 1800s and possibly earlier in the century. Furman University’s Brandon Inabinet ’04 told reporters we may never know the full extent of the damage to the Black cemetery wrought by heavy machinery used in a cleanup effort by Greenville County to clear debris after decades of neglect and recent storm damage. The cemetery is the resting place of more than 350 people, some of them with ties to Furman University. Inabinet, a professor of communication studies and co-chair of Furman’s Task Force on Slavery and Justice, spoke to reporters at FOX Carolina News (in a story that also ran on WCSC-TV in Charleston) and The Post and Courier Greenville. WYFF News 4 also covered the news.
