Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella has issued a formal apology to Nova Scotia’s Black community for discriminatory street checks. That’s when police conduct spot checks on people and collect their personal information.
A recent report found Black people were five times more likely to be targeted than white people in these checks.
Ross Lord explains why Black Nova Scotians are cautiously optimistic that real change is coming.

2.GIVE your name/ID and DO NOT answer any questions without a lawyer.
3. A lawyer will be given to you no matter how broke you are.
4. The police are NOT your friends. Remember that b/c they will do anything to convince you otherwise.
5. They get early retirement and you don’t.
Unbelievable. I can’t imagine what the police department, the Hospitals, and the premieres are going through. People are dying in mass, carriers of the disease are congregating and then bringing it Home. Killing old people and small kids. Killing them. Breaking quarantine is like having a vial of it in their hand and smashing it in someone’s face.

I hope police here in Britain never stop or apologise for stopping black lads. They are far more likely to be carrying weapons, guns, knives. Black people need to acknowledge that black communities have a big problem with gang culture and violence. And for as long as that is the case, police will have to perform random stop and checks.
