2m distancing rule under review despite warnings from scientists – BBC News

The need to maintain a social distance of 2 metres in England is being actively reviewed, the government has announced.

Boris Johnson said it is the right time to reassess the rules, as the number of coronavirus cases continues to fall. It’s understood that a decision will be taken before July 4th, which is when restaurants and pubs could open in England.

Any decision to relax the 2 metre measure would be controversial. Estimating the increased risk from reducing social distancing is a complex process.

Meanwhile many more shops in England selling good regarded as non-essential are re-opening. However the pandemic has accelerated the shift towards online shopping and more traditional stores are likely to close for good.

  1. I'm 67 and for many years the BBC was a trusted source. Not now, in fact I distrust them so much I dont listen anymore. The one-sided coverage of the COVID-19 outbreak is clearly wrong. Presenters who have no idea of science / statistics and the blatantly left leaning direction are enough for me.

And their reporting of the "climate emergency"? I''m going to stop now. THis is our last chance. We only have 10 years left. Make the most of it!

  2. The BBC and all politicians belong in asylums for the out of touch and how many died of covid 19 who did not have underlying health issues and were going to die soon and what about people dying of the lockdown.

  3. I don't get the whole "Social Distance" thing, I just don't understand …I mean, does the virus know. Inner monologue of the virus "those two people are closer than 2 metres …I'LL INFECT THEM!".

  4. Have these scientists looked at what is happening within the country, protests, beach goers, families and friends visiting each other, now queuing outside shops people have been ignoring the 2m social distancing for weeks, these so called intellectuals are blind to what is happening around them, please release them from the labs they need to see what is happening around the country

  5. It's not about the distance! it's about who's infected and when, and who's been infected and when, and who's not been infected, and it's obviously about testing; testing and flaming testing and why are we dragging our heels on this?
2 meters 1 meter seriously unscientific! anyone could think the disease is spread via magnetism or that we are talking about a magnetic range

  6. fuck your 2m distance idiot liar governments and boris….this whole virus is a lie.. u lie about the numbers of deaths about everything. u using this situation for some cruel purpose..fuck u..

  7. People need to decide if this is real.. you can't trust Government health ministers or the WHO..
Sweden's herd immunity is working… The are not destroying their society like other the global economies.

  8. So what? The BBC are heralding that Football is back as if no one has died and we can't live without it. Because it suits them and justifies the millions spent on parasitical "experts". Hypocrits.
Suppose we should ask Marcus Rashford, this unelected footballer has suddenly become an expert on how to run the country. Just knew he would abuse the free publicity afforded by his phoney "celebrity" to get on his soapbox. Free school meals were a good thing but he should have left it that.
