I don't think it's a super controversial statement. There are various national groups within America's broader Latino community and they are more diverse racially and politically than African Americans. Cubans in Florida may be more anti-communist so they vote for the republican party, Puerto Ricans or Mexicans may heavily favor the democratic party etc.
