Donald Trump said ‘nobody has done more for the black community in the US than him, except for maybe Abraham Lincoln’ when expressing his views on American racism amid the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.
The President was referring to his office’s Criminal Justice reform – which overturned laws that saw mainly black males wrongly imprisoned for long-term sentences for petty crimes such as drug abuse.
As the final presidential debate in Nashville, Tennessee moved onto the topic of racial tensions, President Trump said: “I am the least racist person in this room.”
Donald Trump explained his criticisms of the BLM movement saying he thought the initial impression he got of the anti-police language used by members shocked him.
“The first time I ever heard of Black Lives Matter, they were chanting ‘pigs in a blanket’ talking about police,” Trump said.
“Pigs, talking about our police. ‘Pigs in a blanket, fry them like bacon.’ I said that’s a horrible thing. And they were marching down the street. That was my first glimpse of Black Lives Matter.”
Abraham Lincoln is considered as one of the greatest presidents in American history, the lawyer and statesman served for four years until his assassination in 1865, in which time he helped to bring about the abolition of slavery.
