Festivals were already a precarious business, but after a record year in 2019 the coronavirus pandemic brought outdoor events to a halt. The FT talks to organisers, bands, and stage hands to find out whether they can bounce back.

lol it's "live" most of the time
As a consumer, it's so hard to imagine why tickets have become so crazy expensive.
Ask Excision how to run a festival 🦖🦕
Calling outdoor events in the UK as "summer" festivals feels very optimistic.
"It seems the risky business of festivals proves it's about the love, and not the money." I really appreciate that perspective!
Throwing a festival right after covid takes balls of steel! Props to you Womad 🔥 keep the party alive!! ❤️
Great doc!
we lost so many of our attendees because they died of Convid, said no one.
Risky business, but if it’s successful, you can make millions upon millions and retire your damn grandkids so lol
Yes but also it has its downside for actual music sales, espeacially now the format of listening and buying music has changed and of course the mobile phone and free streaming of music effects sales….yes the festival has increased peoples interest in music and also the market but it does have its side effects…..
The title should have been ( the death of electronic music and rise of pop aka edm music )
High risk high reward
They made a movie about that three day festival. The nickname was “fuckfest” I could think of nothing worse, so glad I wasn’t there, so glad I’m not in that young generation any more, who are so naive. My experience with music concerts was one of a “pickpocketing fest” – make sure you don’t have any money in your pocket you won’t be there by the time you leave – there are some real nasty Bogans who attend music festivals. I don’t recommend music festivals at all.
What a joke they shut down OUTSIDE festivals. As we know now , that was a huge mistake.
In Victoria, Australia, the same few festivals are held right in the middle of our hot summers in bushfire season. A few times the events have been evacuated/cancelled. Other times active bushfires weren't close enough to be an issue.
I don't understand the title why is it high risk? In the video people are saying that they went bankrupt 3 times, but they can still organize it?
Scams
There is no way a musical festival can be a risky buisness with the amount they charge for food there.
It's crazy how independent Festivals still feel so much better than the ones from Eventim/LN/AEG, tho they really need the money to survive
How to make a million dollars in the music business…Start with 2 million (or have rich mommies and daddy's (obvious)
Festivals used to be free in the Uk, Once Business got involved they turn into Lame, middle class, consumerist rights of passage..
IDK who cares but all entrepreneurship is like this 🤙🏽🖤 The one exception is the funny money in this business 🧮

They just went on because of false advertisement where you go behind or through billboards or large posters and nothings back there. Everyone’s kind of pedophiles do they don’t care about middle aged people existing or anyone’s debt or obligations or anything. You have to actually be fascistly above them and care about saying or doing anything. It didn’t make sense to attend anything they lured anyone there no one wanted to go or work it. It’s like forced on everyone by loser banks or investors in it.
