University of Utah Black community speaks out on gun violence following Lowe’s death

Members of the University of Utah’s Black community gathered inside the Marriott Library for an event called “Journey Towards Healing.”

The discussion was organized in the wake of the shooting death of student-athlete Aaron Lowe as a way for people to share their emotions and express concerns about the impacts of gun violence on people of color.

“It hits home,” said Meligha Garfield, the director of the Black Cultural Center on campus. “It hits home in various ways.”

  1. Everything wrong is ‘whiteness’. Like get out of here! What happened to Lowe was a tragic…race has absolutely nothing to do with this. He did not get shot because he was black. He got shot because he was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time. Their obsession with race is scary

  2. Praying for his family and friends that they find healing and guidance through this extremely emotional and trying time!
May your every need be met by your loved ones, the community and our Savior!
He was a fine man who had a family, a life, a career, just like any of us! Skin makes no difference! This needs to be handled like any other case. May you gently rest in God’s arms son until you are reunited again!🤍🙏🏽🕊✝️

  3. This incident ironically has many "privileges" (I hate to use that word since they are both deceased but I'm quoting the social justice warriors) as the Gabby Petito case. White girl goes missing.. all over the news.. everyone "well what about the indigenous, POC, people that are missing.. why is all the attention given to the white girl!?" This case.. black FOOTBALL player gets killed and there's 3 headlines on every news station about it. What about the "average joe" in Kearns, Ogden, Sandy, SLC, that got shot and killed recently. Wheres the town hall meeting to discuss their deaths? Where's their headlines?

  4. ☝️💜👊✊🧿📿 This so unfortunately ! No excuses yes 🙌 I will taking 100 control of my kids . Is parents need to come together to fix . I pray god brings light 💡 to all this evil hate .

  5. Race had ZERO to do with this, ZIP, NADA. Don’t even try it. It wasn’t even on campus.
In this instance. The murderer was just arrested. Buk M Buk. Turns out he has a lengthy violent criminal history. Including robbing a father and daughter at gun point less than two years ago… can the criminal justice system explain why this man was walking out on the street freely?
