Burkina Faso Under Ibrahim Traore’s rule

Burkina Faso Under Ibrahim Traore’s rule

It has been a year since Captain Ibrahim Traore became the leader of Burkina Faso following a military coup. Upon assuming power, Captain Traore had set a goal of enhancing security and reclaiming control of areas occupied by armed groups in the West African country.

Militant attacks have caused thousands of deaths while more than two million people have been displaced in Burkina Faso since 2015 when the violence spilled over from neighbouring Mali and Niger. Traore had promised to reverse the trend in a few months.

By the end of August 2023, the government announced the successful return of over 190,000 of those displaced to their original communities. But the security situation remains precarious.

Captain Traore himself has said ”we are at war” referring to the violence. He suggested the insecurity could prevent the country from conducting elections scheduled for next year.

He told journalists on his one year anniversary that the elections were ”not a priority” and that the was ensuring security to ensure candidates are able to travel across the country to campaign.

Although under the transitional plan he was not expected to contest in the election, he hinted at changing the constitution – which could allow him to stand in the elections.

This is coming amid deteriorating relations between Burkina Faso and its former colonial ruler, France with France. The West African country under Traore’s junta expelled French troops in February 2023. The junta is strengthening ties with Russia, a major Western rival.

One major decision taken by Burkina Faso along with neighbouring Mali and Niger – both also led by military rulers – is the signing of a mutual defence pact known as the Alliance of Sahel States as anti-French sentiment grows across the region.

So how has Burkina Faso fared in Traore’s first year as leader?

  1. Dear Lady,
Your report shows that you were sent to play the role as BBC, CNN and all the other mainstream media. Where is Ibrahim Traoré today? His people and the world love him and we in Africa we need him. You, as a journalist, should do your due diligence before talking, please! The AES is already on the formed and gaining grounds across Africa. It is because this same kind of journalism that led to the death of Kwame Nkruma, Patrice Limumba, Thomas Sankara, Gaddafi etc. Be careful! Africa has taken a different turn and nothing will stop it… Even your misguided and tele-guided journalism will not brainwash us anymore!

  2. How is this possible? I've never understood how leadership of a country can can at any moment. How exactly does this happen? Asking because I am researching other countries that would be good places for my family to live

  3. The AES countries have to build border walls first to sure up their security from outside threats. After that establish national security and a rule of law. I believe that they should allow citizens the right to own weapons and be able to defend themselves. The reason why corruption in the continent is so bad is because we are forced to rely on the government too much

  4. You still haven't mentioned the fact thay the terrorists are funded trained and armed by the people that claim to be fighting them for you. What you don't know about that don't tell me the west told you thay haven't. The world bank are proving liars yet you just believe any lies thay tell you .maybe you should learn what a real reporter is supposed to do

  7. I agree we can’t only rely on Russia which makes us depended on another country again and we’re back to the old problems of countries in Africa , but I have high hopes. Like u see in Other African countries, politicians are now taking out loans for China more but in the long run it will hurt us and the debt grows so large that some countries is a puppet now to china. Let’s hope history does not repeat itself

  8. Thank God he traore did not over thrown a democratic government, he over thrown a military government that makes him legitimate to rule the country and takes care of his people. May Allah guide in his endeavours

  9. Patrice Lumumba – Democratic Republic of the Congo

    Thomas Sankara – Burkina Faso
