Martinique, a picturesque French Caribbean island, is gripped by violent protests as residents revolt against skyrocketing living costs. Food prices are 40% higher than in mainland France, pushing people to the brink. What began as peaceful demonstrations have spiralled into chaos—burning barricades, looted stores, and clashes with police. One person has already been killed, and over two dozen officers have been injured. The government has imposed a curfew and banned public gatherings, but tensions remain high. Protesters demand urgent action to align local prices with those of France, as frustration over economic inequality fuels the island’s growing unrest.

  1. Get in line, Martinique. This is happening, literally, everywhere on the planet. Try coming to California if you want to see real skyrocketing prices. This has nothing to do with colonialism, and everyrthing to do with end-stage end-stage capitalism and the decline of our global-industrial civilization. Martinique is extremely fortunate its economy is based on the Euro (an international reserve currency), instead of some worthless local currency.

  2. This news report fails to give the most important information. This is happening because the békés, the direct descendents of slave owners, have a total monopoly over all the trade on the islands.

They run all the container import, and own all the supermarkets on the islands giving them an unfair monopoly. Imagine that the families thay owned slaves here are now the ones who import all our food. And of course they jack up the prices… and that's what's pissing us off and why there is this protest.

  3. Macron and his team are hypocrits. But local politicians and leaders in Martinique are too and extort people with all these excessive prices. Martinique and Guadeloupe are two wonderful islands. Unbelievable beautiful island, the cost of living push people to leave, that s sad. Macron and all his colleagues are cynical one, they have only worked in administration in reserved job or politics, they practice co-option and entrism on a lot of colony. They have no view for france. EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD PEOPLE DIE OF POLITICIANS WITHOUT IMAGINATION STRATEGY VIEW AND IDEAS . That s gonna explode everywhere, spain now then italy, france that s gonna come too. Maybe germany is preserved for the moment in europe. I obviously support and stand with martinique and guadeloupe in that fight. Happy that martinique decide to protest, it's always guadeloupe in general. I love these two islands.

  4. Smart…let’s spend money on reenforcements and not the food. The food grown on the island gets exported and return and sold at a higher price. Why allow a white Frenchman control over the island when everyone is hurting not just some. And this French guy does not live there. 😂😂

  5. IDK what these people expect. It's simple economics. They live on a remote island where food needs to be imported from the mainland so of course it's going to be more expensive. Hawaii is the same. Everyone knows things in Hawaii are more expensive as they need to be imported, but you never see Hawaiians protesting. Every remote place that needs to rely on imports is more expensive. How can they possibly expect to pay the same prices as they pay on the mainland where food is locally sourced and doesn't need to be shipped overseas? They expect those shipping companies to send it to them for free? They need to offset the shipping costs somehow. If they want food from France, they need to pay. Otherwise, the solution to lower food costs would be to produce their own food. And if there are laws that are somehow preventing that, than THAT'S what they should be protesting, but how can they expect to get food from France and pay the same prices as mainland France, where it's not being imported from anywhere? Food producers and shipping companies are supposed to lose money, because the islanders don't wanna pay more? Do these people really not understand how basic economics work?

  6. They wanna live on an island, but they don’t want to pay island prices. They want first world standards that don’t want to pay first world prices. I’m sure there’s a solution to this. Mainland France. What I’ve heard is thatgroceries are 40% cheaperthere.

  7. The issue is that this island never got out from slavery…. the french came took the island and brung Africans slaves to work, then the slavery was abolished, yet the colonizers stayed and kept their lands, they got 80% of the island and own everything….everyone works for them over there, therefore, they got played, slavery never ended over there, only switch to pay labors with overpriced food …..they only way out is kicked the colonizers out wich means war with france

  8. What you guys don’t want to say is that the government are using disproportionated means against very peaceful protesters to intimidate them and threaten them. Imagine if you have a kid that is expressing his dad his sadness and in return he show him a belt and threaten him with it , Then the kid becomes rebellious and make noise. You guys are only showing the noise made by the kids and not the story before!!!!!!you are on the wrong side of the story. Be careful.
