The internet has been in an uproar since the authorities in Congo announced the planned execution of 170 prisoners on death row. According to the authorities, the prisoners were armed robbers and urban bandits who had been causing chaos and violence across several cities in the country. The interesting thing is that the majority of the prisoners were between the ages of 18 -35. While some, especially those in the international community, have condemned the move, others in Congo applaud the decision of the Congolese government. But the big question is “Will the death penalty help to reduce the insecurity and violence in Congo cities? Let’s find out.

As you know the DRC is one of those African countries that has been experiencing severe insecurity and violence for decades. According to several reports, there are more than a hundred different armed groups operating in the country, including the notorious M23 group. Many of these groups regularly perpetrate widespread violations and abuses against civilians that may amount to crimes against humanity and war crimes. In addition to this, the country also has to deal with local urban gangs known as the Kulunas who have also incited violence and chaos in the country.

Prior to all these, the government of Congo had abolished the death penalty in 1981 with the last executions held in 2003. However, the law was reinstated in 2006. Now, since Felix Tshisekedi, the President of Congo resumed office in 2019, the insecurity and chaos have been on the increase, even in its capital city, Kinshasa. The perpetrators of this insecurity are none other than the Kulunas. Perhaps the pressure of dealing with insecurity from every angle is what pushed the government to announce the resumption of capital punishment in March 2024.

  1. Does this comment section know how many people have been displaced and killed by these young rebels. None of you knows what is happening in Congo and what rebels are doing to the people. It's been decades and neighbouring countries are literally filled with Congolese refugees. Do some research before jumping to conclusions please.

  2. When you’re on the outside looking in.. it’s best to close your mouth!!! We have no idea of the suffering the people of Congo is going through with so much crime.. now watch how the decrease in crime will prevail.. a lot of countries needs to stricken the laws to put fear in criminals and killers.. my
    Condolences to the victims ❤

  6. Sad. nevertheless, locals seem to be happy whilst international community thinks this is wrong. I think you have no absolute right to comment on domestic issues espeicially where you dont understand

  7. if a leader is devoted to stabilising the county like Burkina Faso…The west should desist from calling him Dictator…Now that Mr trap is Chessing away all illegal
Migrates…some of whom are African who had long settled in America the wrong ..who has called him dictator, does he mind the views from African leaders.

  8. The government is full of crime bro! When compared with those corrupted government those peoples didn't do anything wrong. But because of having money and power, noone speaks about them. No justice in Africa for sure. I am traumatized by watching this disaster.

  9. False informations do your research. those ones shown being executed looked healthy they look more like ethiopians then congolese and they are wearing plain blue tops with no yellow stripes found in the congolese ones…most are not killed but sent very far away from their families in an island.
