US President Donald Trump has cut financial aid to South Africa, over a land law aimed at addressing the country’s apartheid past. The law allows South Africa’s government to seize land in certain situations where it is not being used, or if it’s in the public interest to be redistributed. Trump claims South Africa is ”confiscating land.” His close ally Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa, alleges the law is “racist.”

Aid often comes with strings attached—countries receiving aid are pressured to follow policies that benefit the donor nations, like privatizing industries, opening up markets to foreign companies, or taking on debts they can never repay. This creates a cycle where African countries are forced to rely on outside help instead of developing their own economies.
The real insult is that Africa doesn’t need aid—it needs economic freedom. If African nations had full control over their resources, trade, and finances, they could generate their own wealth without foreign interference. Western powers know this, which is why they keep offering “aid” instead of letting Africa truly rise.
