South Africa: The aftermath of land reforms | DW News

Land ownership is a contentious issue in South Africa, with most farmland still being owned by white people three decades after the end of apartheid. Some Afrikaner farmers believe that the land reform laws under the new Expropriation Act could lead to the confiscation of white-owned farms, as was the case in the early 2000s in neighboring Zimbabwe.

  1. Whoa DW. You are misquoting the Land Audit of 2017. It said 72% of farm land owned by individuals are white, which accounts for 24% of total farm land. Trusts own 31% of all farms, and companies own 25% of all farms. There is a lot more to consider than race when talking about land ownership.

  2. Why we allow those people to be doing this in africa, why africa is the place those people doing what there want they have no type of real rights to do those thing you all which makes us poor but we are not the world richest place is africas wealth, you all stolen everything from us africa, africa is not poor you all put us that why.

  3. In the next four years or so ANC will be voted out and this misinformation of the Afriforum that says the land is being grabbed will be turned into reality. We will have MKP and EFF in coalition and that time Donald Trump won't be there to help them

  4. They are comparing what happened 100 years ago with today. Things happen like it or not. Those Zulus took land also so what about that. It’s like it’s ok to target white people for what was done before they were born. We are not your punching bag or a source of free money.

  5. The South African Government is in no way wrong for wanting to address the colonial and apartheid legacies that still prevail systematically in the country. The number of legislations that have been enacted for the transformation effort, even though having good intentions, have been poorly implemented. What has been done by Afriforum and Solidarity which are NGOs that cater to the needs and interests of a minority race group who feel threatened by laws that could address the socio-economic inequality of the country is not justified in that it sows divisions and regresses the efforts of forging a more unified and common cause that we as South Africans should be striving for. Shame on them.

  6. Horrid journalism: there have been numerous statements about the reasons for this change, and if you bothered to read this bill you would have seen its much the same as the Apartheid era legislation. The change is very minor, however thry did have a "use it, or lose it" type law. Man, i was really happy with you until this article

  7. Yes, My ancestors from 2000 years ago were invading others and taking their land, and were in turn being invaded and losing it. they all intermarried and made what is now Britian. they also invaded the Dutch Cape before SA existed, Just to stop Napoleon getting to so controlling the Cape sea route. Slavery had been banned in Britian due to William Wilberforce so they did the same in the Cape. This made the great trek, They were given an area in Port Natal by the Zulus. then they declared war on the Zulu and won! One in a long chain on invasions. So now most of SA area belonged to them apart from the freestate and Transvaal. The Boer war sorted that out. Then they unified the lot and it became the Union of South Africa. And in 1994? who won? so nothing has changed. Soon, it will be WEF world Central Government that owns it, as well as the rest of the world.

  8. I'm south African and NOT white.
People who had to move decades ago, where moved to proper housing so called townships which are really suburbs. The. Ew government had a land claims commission where people who were displaced were paid out.
The government is not seizing land- there's a lot of unused land.
They want developed farms and businesses. But 1 seized farm would not benefit the millions of citizens. Like the ANC always did, they'll give it to their cadres who will then sell it or abandon it.
We had many incidents where thousands of farm animals died because of farms that were given to ANC ministers and cadres.
There's a high food shortage in SA. Food is unaffordable. Closing down productive farms , just to punish whites, will actually end up causing more misery to the millions of poor people.
Leave all those farms – those farmers took bushland and built it. The government should take undeveloped bushland and build more farms. It will create jobs and wealth and most of all – food for the starving millions.
The ANC should not put their friends, the Cuban, the Chinese, the middle easterns etc first, but the people of SA.
They need to think this through

  9. When was there a land grab in south africa?Sofia town was a brokend down slum like Johannesburg CBD is today, that people were squatting in. they did not have tilte Deeds. Its like saying squatter camps are legitimate settlements and the people own the land they are squatting in the aparheid government provided rdp houses basically.

  10. The Afrikaaners probably owns most farms in SA, but many thousand of farmers have been brutallly murdered.
The Afrikaaners have contributed to food security in South Africa.
Maybe, we need an audit Province by province to see what land is owned by the white community and which land the Government wants to expropriate.

  11. Attacking Private Property Ownership No Matter what the Political Argument is Unacceptable to the Free World Government seizure of Property Target Taxation Oppressive affirmative Action South Africa has acted in a Malicious Misguided Revenge Program Shame on them

  12. No African is arguing with Arabs about Arab land.
No African is arguing with Asians about Asian land.
No African is arguing with Europeans about European land.

So why do we Africans have to argue with others about African land?

  13. The Khoisan people are the first inhabitants of South Africa, yet the ANC government refuses to give them land or acknowledge their claims.

Secondly, the ANC ruling party just want land for it's constituents, and not for the ordinary citizens.

Lastly, If you really want to understand my second point, there should be an Expropriation land audit report, to trace what happened to already expropriated land.

  14. I like how Mr. Lamola decries the removal of financial assistance as "Interference with a sovereign state." Which, I would agree if not for some facts about the situation. If you are reliant upon foreign aid. You are not sovereign. You are beholden to those providing for you. And if you are sovereign, as you claim to be, then it shouldn't be important. It doesn't "interfere" with anything. Because you don't need it.

The world has normalized the US's charitable nature, and only choose to notice, and get really upset, when they aren't handing out massive amounts of money for free. The entitlement is real.

  15. The Scramble for Africa. A story of how Africa was robbed blind. Why is this even up for discussion with Trump? The last time I checked, African land doesn’t belong to Trump, so South Africa. Classic, accuse the victim of a crime to undermine their rights.

  16. Almost all of those who were offered land or money, took the money. Also note apartheid was 31 years ago. You standing with your hands open, how much did the ANC do for you? Alot of people still waiting for their RDP house since 1994 and some have died while waiting. The land issue is just a carrot because they cannot afford bribing anymore because they stole everything. U are being fooled

  17. Chumps only motivation to attack South Africa Is to get South Africa to drop the ICJ charges against his master Netanyahu and trumps owner mrs. EIDELSTEIN
