In Ohio, it's illegal to allow passengers to ride in the cargo area of a U-Haul truck or trailer.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.51: prohibits drivers of trucks, trailers, or semitrailers from permitting anyone to ride in the cargo storage area or on a tailgate (unless it's for specialized highway or street maintenance).
U-Haul's own safety guidelines: also explicitly state that it's dangerous and against the law to allow passengers or pets to ride in the cargo area.
Passengers risk serious injury: from shifting cargo, asphyxiation, and lack of collision protection.
Instead, passengers should ride in the cab: with a safety belt or in another vehicle.
U-Haul also prohibits transporting animals: in the back of their moving trucks, vans, or trailers.
