40 years ago my parent, my sister and I drove from Johannesburg to Durban, and then from Durban to Cape Town. We are from the USA. It was as safe as driving in my home state. No problems at all. Security was never a worry. Even when we stayed overnight in Umtata. Just some nice white folks from the USA. Try that now. Ha. South Africa is no longer.
